A place where children flourish

Stonelaw Preschool is a not-for-profit, committee-led nursery based in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire. During term time, we provide a safe, secure and caring environment for young children aged between three and five years old.

All of our places are entirely funded by South Lanarkshire Council, so parents don’t have to pay for their children to be cared for during our opening hours of 8:30am and 2:30pm. Our healthy snacks and lunches are free, too.

We also provide optional, affordable wraparound care for children between the hours of 8am and 4pm to help parents and caregivers meet their childcare needs. Drop us a line or give us a call for more details!

We’re based at the historic Stonelaw Church in Rutherglen, where we have two rooms and an attractive outdoor garden space to engage our children in learning and play.

Every day at Stonelaw is different because we take a child-centred approach to learning and teaching. We’re a a small nursery where each member of staff has the freedom to spend quality time with children, adapting quickly to their needs – something which busier nursery settings cannot always offer.

Our staff are skilled at capturing the magic of when a child is deeply involved in learning through a natural interest. We use that moment of concentration to build a ‘teachable moment’, knowing when to intervene and when to stand back.

Through these precious teachable moments, we ensure that each child develops skills, gains knowledge and understanding therefore making progression through the early stages of the curriculum for excellence.

Each teachable moment leads to the next step for each child, creating a natural progression of learning which helps set them up for their eventual transition to primary school.

Helping our children engage with and learn from nature is a key part of Stonelaw’s approach to teaching.

We’re lucky to be surrounded by green spaces and our own outdoor play area, so we spend as much time as we can outside.

We work with local charity Grow 73 to help plant and maintain local community gardens, as well as our own outdoor space.

The children love being able to see what they plant grow and flourish - and we love to see the children grow and flourish too!
